As part of the NASA Grand Challenge, labs created a one size fits all system to couple telescopes with cellphones. The prototype companion app used the location, pitch and yaw of the phone along with the focal length and magnification of the telescope to calculate what constellations the telescope was focusing on. Part of the long term strategy was to create a network of small telescopes which would enable NASA to identify new asteroids and determine whether or not they pose a potential threat.
